Условное число, основанное на ограничении (или регулировании) значений ожидаемого переходного перенапряжения, возникающего в цепи (или в электрической системе с различными номинальными напряжениями), зависящее от способов воздействия на перенапряжения.
Примечание. В электрической системе переход от одной категории перенапряжения к другой, более низкой, достигается средствами, совместимыми с требованиями к переходным участкам, например с помощью устройства для защиты от перенапряжений или последовательно-параллельного присоединения импеданса, способного рассеять, поглотить или отклонить энергию соответствующего импульсного тока с целью снижения переходного перенапряжения до желательно меньшей категории перенапряжения.
