La firme Apple est souvent appelée la “firme à la pomme”, du fait de son nom et de son logo (une pomme multicolore dans laquelle on a croqué). Apple Computer est fondé en 1976 à Cupertino (Californie) par Steve Jobs et Steve Wosniak, et lance la même année son premier ordinateur personnel, l’Apple I, suivi un an après de l’Apple II, plus petit, avec un écran couleur en option. En 1984, Apple lance le Macintosh (couramment appelé Mac), qui est le premier ordinateur personnel disposant d’une interface graphique intuitive facilement utilisable par le non spécialiste, et qui se vend à des millions d’exemplaires. Ce jusqu’au début des années 1990, où le Mac se trouve distancé par les ordinateurs fonctionnant sous Windows (le système d’exploitation de Microsoft), concurrent du Mac OS (operating system). Mac devient ensuite une gamme d’ordinateurs personnels configurés pour une utilisation facile par l’usager, y compris pour l’internet avec ses modèles iMac et iBook (ordinateur portable). En octobre 2001, Apple lance l’iPod, un baladeur numérique permettant d’écouter de la musique. Le succès est immédiat, et l’iPod devient le symbole d’une génération. En avril 2003, Apple lance l’iTunes Music Store, un site de téléchargement payant de musique en ligne. En mars 2001, le système d’exploitation Mac OS cède la place au Mac OS X. En janvier 2006, Intel devient le nouveau partenaire d’Apple pour les nouveaux modèles de Mac, avec le microprocesseur x86, au lieu d’IBM et Motorola. En janvier 2007, Apple annonce le lancement prochain du iPhone, un téléphone portable multifonctions comprenant un iPod intégré.
