There are various types of Haka:Peruperu is to be performed with weapons. Hard conditioning makes the warriors physically and mentally fit. Peruperu comes for the word peru "anger", and this is how it got it's name. Its psychological purpose is to demoralise the enemy, which no other form of haka can match. This Ngeri style Haka is a Maori challenge song credited to Te Rauparaha. Today it is performed before sporting events and other occasions by men. In fact the All Black rendition of Ka Mate may have undergone quite a few changes along the way to make it more impressive or appropriate to the game of rugby. <POAT.JPG">In mature plants the leaves are 10-15 mm wide and 10-15 mm long. The leaves have a crenate margin (i.e. with shallow, rounded teeth) and the leaf blades are dotted with glands. There is a distinctive join between the leaf stem and the blade of the leaf. Plants grow up to 8 m tall but are usually less than 2 m tall. The flowers are small (approx. 5 mm in diameter) and vary from green to white. They are visited by many insects, including native bees, and also provide food for birds. The seeds are shiny and black. Poataniwha only occurs naturally in New Zealand. It occurs in both the North and South Islands. -

"The buried village"The 1886 Tarawera eruption buried the tourist village of Te Wairoa, including McRae's Hotel (Rotomahana Hotel). The village has been excavated and is now open to the public. During the euption, some houses, with their inhabitants still inside, were buried. Other houses were left empty as their owners fled the village. One of the two buildings to survive the eruption was the whare of a Maori guide, Sophia. More than 60 people sheltered there during the night. The other building was the runanga or meeting house. At the Rotomahana Hotel, the inhabitants had to first leave one room when the roof collapsed under the hail of ash, rocks and mud, and then the entire hotel. One guest died when the hotel veranda collapsed but others made it to safety in the guide's whare. The schoolteacher and five of his family were buried under tons of mud and ash. Others in the house managed to escape and sheltered for the rest of the night in a chicken house.<TE mu parsonage.jpg"> -

Habitat: This small tree or shrub occurs at sites near the sea, but can be found in a range of habitats, including open forest, cliffs, limestone outcrops and near lakes and lagoons, as well as rocky shores and beaches.Features: A small tree that can grow up to 6 m tall and has dark brown bark. The leaves are leathery, slightly curled at the margins and may vary in size depending on the habitat. It produces yellow flowers from November to April, while the orange or yellow fruit can be seen throughout the year.
