5 Tejano
(Sp. model spelled same [texáno] < Tejas or Texas (see below) and the Spanish suffix -ano 'pertaining to or originating from')Carlisle: 1844. Originally a Texan of Mexican descent; however, in the second half of the nineteenth century it came to mean any Texan, but generally one of Anglo descent. Santamaría concurs that it means 'from Texas.' Cobos indicates that in New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish, it is used to refer to a white stranger in an uncomplimentary fashion, whether he is from Texas or from some place farther east. Gringo is an equivalent term. More recently, it has again been applied with its original meaning, as in Tejano (Tex-Mex) music. In northern Mexico the term can also refer to a cowboy hat and is used to distinguish it from the traditional sombrero that the charro or vaquero wore. -
