mod. v модальный глагол (1). Модальный глагол would употребляется при выражении и оформлении вежливой просьбы, приглашения:I would like (I'd like) another cup of tea — Я бы выпил еще чашку чая.
Would you like to come with us? — Не хотите ли пойти с нами?
(2). Отрицательная форма would указывает на нежелание или отказ совершить действие и часто используется с неодушевленными предметами при нарушении их обычных функций:There is something wrong with the lock, the key wouldn't turn — Что-то случилось с замком. Ключ не поворачивается.
(3). Модальный глагол would указывает на повторность привычного, характерного для подлежащего действия в прошлом и соответствует русскому бывало, когда-то, некогда. Русское бывало (делал что-либо), кроме would (do smth), передается также конструкцией used to do smth. Would в этом значении, в отличие от used to do smth, относится только к действиям, в то время как used to do может относиться и к действиям, и к состояниям:I used to have a car — У меня когда-то была машина ( но не I would have a car),

We used to/would go boating every Sunday — Мы, бывало, каждое воскресенье катались на лодке. Оба глагола подчеркивают, что событие относится к отдаленному прошлому. Would обычно подразумевает, что действие было привычным и характерным для того, кто обозначен подлежащим. (4).
