A hymn sheet — это лист бумаги, на котором напечатаны слова гимнов, которые будут исполняться на какой-либо религиозной церемонии — крещении, похоронах или венчании. Каждый присутствующий получает такой листок и, если захочет, присоединяется к исполнению гимнов, выбранных из традиционного сборника гимнов в соответствии с предстоящей церемонией и по желанию родителей ребёнка, которого крестят, или скорбящих родственников покойного, или жениха и невесты. Фраза to sing from the same hymn sheet позднее расширила своё буквальное значение и стала обозначать любую ситуацию, когда необходимо объединение, единство, единогласие, например представление политической программы или деловой стратегии.These politicians belong to the same party, but are constantly arguing about what should be done.
