Считается, что в то время так называли этих существ на всеобщем. Поэтому, согласно общей схеме, это слово следовало бы перевести на английский (или на язык перевода). В книге "The Hobbit" я перевел его всюду (кроме одного места) как "гоблин", но вообще-то это название (и, насколько мне известно, его аналоги в других европейских языках) плохо подходит. Орки во "Властелине Колец" и в "Сильмариллионе", обладают, конечно и традиционными для гоблинов чертами, но, вообще говоря, у них другое происхождение, иная роль, и они иным образом связаны с эльфами. В любом случае, мне показалось (и я продолжаю так считать), что "орк" – это удачно звучащее название для подобных существ. Его следует сохранить. В языках германской группы это слово должно было бы писаться "ork" (в нидерландском переводе так оно и есть), но я в стольких местах уже использовал "orc", что мне не захотелось исправлять английский текст, хотя производное прилагательное я пишу (по необходимости) как "orkish". На сероэльфийском это слово звучит как "orch" (мн.ч. "yrch"). Исходно я взял слово "orc" из древнеанглийского [ Beowulf 112 "orc-nass" {"Беовульф" – древний англо-саксонский эпос, сохранившийся в единственной рукописи 10 в. на древнеанглийском языке. Его 112-ая строка – "eotenas ond ylfe ond orcneas," (вероятно, вместо "orc-nass" в тексте Толкина следует читать "orcneas").}, и глосса "orc" = "pyrs" {Вероятно ошибка, должно быть "þyrs".} (великан-людоед), "heldeofol" (демон ада)]. Считается, что оно не связано с современным английским словом "orc", "ork" (так называют некоторых морских животных, родичей дельфина).
