2 Negro Cloth
A cheap and very coarse plain weave hemp cloth, often mixed with cotton, imported by America from England during the 17th and 18th centuries and used for clothing for the negro slaves. At the beginning of the 19th century when American mills began to make the cloth, some of them used coarse wool for weft which they imported from Smyrna. -
3 Ambari Hemp (Or Kenaf)
Very long, light-coloured, silky, soft and strong bast fibre. The fibre is from 5 to 6 feet in length and both harsher and stiffer than the fibre of hemp. It is much used by the natives of India for the manufacture of ropes, strings and a coarse canvas cloth for making into sacks. Also known as Gambo hemp. The plant is the kenaf plant. Hibiscus cannabinus, and cultivated in Persia and Trans-Caspian Russia. 4 Horse-Hair Cloth
The original cloth was made by a Paris manufacturer in the 18th century who patented a process to make horse-hair cloth for upholstery and this was very popular for some years but is now obsolete. The stuffing cloth now used as stiffening and underlining for coats is often made of glazed cotton or hemp yarn exclusively because of the high price of the horse hair. See Palmet fibre which is used as a substitute for horse hair as well as "black fibre." -
5 Calloose Hemp
A very strong stem fibre, obtained from the Urtica plant in Sumatra; used for cordage. The plant is a nettle and not a hemp as its name would imply. Fabrics of the China grass-cloth type have been made from the fibres. -
6 Monks' Cloth
A heavy all-cotton fabric woven in a basket weave from coarse and rough yarns, 49/50-in. wide. The cloth is a heavy canvas. Sometimes a flax, jute, or hemp yarn is used as weft, either natural colour, or brown, blue or green dyed. Used for furnishings. Also known as Abbot-Cloister, Druid or Friar cloth. -
7 African Hemp
A fibre obtained from the leaves of the "Sanseviera Zeylanica", which grows in Africa, India and Ceylon. The fibre is shorter than other varieties and is largely used for making cordage, mats and coarse cloth. -
8 Kaffir Hemp
A very strong white bast fibre, yielded by the South African Grewia Occidentalis; used for rope and cloth by the Kaffirs. The fibre is obtained by a process of retting. -
9 Swedish Hemp
The fibre obtained from the stinging nettle plant Urtica Dioica which is cultivated in Sweden for its fibre, and used for the making of cordage, low quality cloth and fish lines. -
10 Paper Cloth
A cotton hemp or jute fabric, coated with paper on one or both sides. It is processed between heavy rollers and is used for boxes, etc. -
