SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 15 July 1911 Boston, Massachusetts, USA[br]American physician and cardiologist, inventor of the electric cardiac " pacemaker ".[br]Zoll graduated MD from Harvard in 1936 and spent the next three years in practice, specializing in cardiology, in Boston. He served in the armed forces during 1939–45 and continued in cardiac research at Harvard Medical School and as a consultant in cardiology to various Boston hospitals. In 1952 he carried out the first successful human defibrillation using electric shock.
