Се состои од алуминиумски плочи (од 3 до пет) обложени со магнетно чувствителен материјал, глава за читање/запишување (сместени во херметички затворена кутија) и интерфејс (се нарекува и контролер) за врска со централниот систем. Овозможува запишување и читање на податоци со произволен пристап. Капацитетот на складираните податоци се мери во мегабајти и гигабајти. Види controller, interface, random access. -
