В начале XIX в. владельцы частных городских домов покупали песок для чистки кухонной утвари, уборки полов, а также для птичьих клеток. Sandboys покупали песок очень дёшево и торговали им, разнося по домам и зарабатывая тем самым немало денег. Отсюда выражение as happy as a sandboy (жизнерадостный, очень счастливый), которое употребляется до сих пор. К концу века песок заменили опилками, и sandboys стали менее счастливыми.
