XIX в., крупнейшая "золотая лихорадка" в истории страны началась с открытием 24 января 1848 золота у лесопилки Саттера [ Sutter's Mill] на р. Американ [ American River] в северной Калифорнии. Когда слухи об этом достигли Сан-Франциско, со всей Калифорнии туда устремились золотоискатели. Пик лихорадки пришелся на 1849. Население Калифорнии выросло с 14 тыс. человек в 1848 до 100 тыс. в 1850, а к 1860 составило 380 тыс. человек. Многие из волны "людей 49-го" [ Forty-niners] были выходцами из Китая, Австралии, Южной Америки. В течение десятилетия основная добыча золота велась в трех районах Калифорнии: главный район добычи - Сьерра-Невада [ Sierra Nevada], южнее лесопилки Саттера, второй - к северу от нее, в округе Невада [Nevada County], третий - северные береговые хребты западнее г. Шаста [ Shasta, Mount]. В 1859-90 золотоискатели переезжали от одного месторождения к другому в Колорадо, Неваде, Айдахо, Юте, Монтане и Аризоне. Новые вспышки "золотой лихорадки" произошли на Клондайке [ Klondike Gold Rush] (1896) и на Аляске (1898).
