To be in cahoots with someone значит быть в союзе, в лиге, в партнёрстве с кем-либо; быть в сговоре с кем-либо. В настоящее время эту фразу можно услышать только от американца. Тот факт, что французское слово cahute, немецкое Kajüte, нидерландское kajuit имеют одно и то же значение, а именно — маленький домик, избушка, шалаш, позволяет предположить, что in cahoots with означает простейшее жильё, в котором жили первые иммигранты в Америке. Это выражение вошло в употребление в начале XIX в. В настоящее время слово cahoot употребляется только во множественном числе.It is strange that all the engineers have been sacked except John. I reckon he's in cahoots with the management. — Странно, что уволили всех инженеров, исключая Джона. Я полагаю, что он в сговоре с дирекцией.
