SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 22 July 1810 Vienna, Austriad. 25 February 1868 Vienna, Austria[br]Austrian neurologist, developer of the techniques of laryngoscopy.[br]The son of a wealthy jeweller, he attended medical school in Vienna and qualified in 1836. Until 1844 he was engaged in research into the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. In 1844, while on a visit to Paris, he came to the attention of Baron Türckheim, Director of the General Hospital in Vienna. The consequence was the establishment of a special division of the hospital for nervous diseases, with Türck in charge. In 1857 he was appointed Chief Physician to the largest hospital in Vienna and at the same time he became aware of the invention in 1855 by Manuel García, a music teacher of Paris, of a practical laryngoscope. Türck adapted the apparatus to clinical purposes and proceeded to establish the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques required for its efficient use. Some conflict over priority ensued following a publication by Johann Nepomuk Czermak in 1858, but eventually a professional declaration asserted Türck's priority.[br]Bibliography1862, Recherches cliniques sur diverses maladies du larynx, de la trachée et du pharynx étudiées à l'aide du laryngoscope, Paris.Papers in Allgemein. 52 Morton, William Thomas Green
SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 1819 Charlton, Massachusetts, USAd. 1868 New York, USA[br]American dentist, pioneer of inhalation anaesthesia using ether.[br]He received his dental training at Baltimore College of Dental Surgery and by 1842 was in a short-lived partnership with Horace Wells. Following the latter's successful dental anaesthesia using nitrous oxide in 1844 and his later failures of general anaesthesia, Morton embarked on a period of medical training at Massachusetts Medical College. The use of ether had been suggested by an acquaintance, Charles Jackson, a chemist and geologist, and in 1846 Morton commenced his investigations with a dog, himself and two assistants as subjects. The first major operation under ether general anaesthesia was performed at the Massachusetts General Hospital in October 1846. The technique speedily gained widespread acceptance in America and Europe. Morton's later life was bedevilled by prolonged acrimony over the question of priority of the discovery.[br]BibliographyFurther ReadingW.J.Morton, 1905, Memoranda Relating to the Discovery of Surgical Anaesthesia.B.M.Duncum, 1947, Development of Inhalational Anaesthesia.MGBiographical history of technology > Morton, William Thomas Green

SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 1815 Connecticut, USAd. 1848 Hartford, Connecticut, USA[br]American dentist, pioneer of dental extraction under nitrous oxide gas (laughing gas) anaesthesia.[br]Practising in Hartford, Connecticut, he was in partnership with W.T.G. Morton during 1842–3. Following experiences at a party in December 1844, where laughing gas (nitrous oxide) was used, Wells experimented with it as an anaesthetic during dental extractions, using himself as the first subject. By January 1845 he had employed the technique successfully in fifteen cases and made arrangements for its use as a general anaesthetic for a major operation at Massachusetts General Hospital. The experiment was a failure and he became discouraged from further enterprise in the field. He was eventually confined in an asylum, and very shortly after committed suicide.[br]Bibliography1838, An Essay on Teeth.1847, A History of the Discovery of the Application of Nitrous Oxide Gas, Ether and Other Vapours to Surgical Operations, Hartford.Further ReadingB.M.Duncum, 1947, Development of Inhalational Anaesthesia.MG -
