  • 48 either

    I a 1. любой, один из двух, тот или иной; 2. оба, и тот и другой (1). При существительном, определяемом прилагательным either, никакие другие определения не употребляются:

    Either room will do — Любая из этих комнат подойдет.

    I don't fake either side in this argument — Я не поддерживаю ни ту, ни другую сторону в этом споре.

    (2). Прилагательное either 2. обычно употребляется со словами side, end:

    on either side of the road — по обе стороны дороги;

    on either side of the door — no обе стороны двери;

    on either side of the river — на обоих берегах реки;

    at either end of the table — на обоих концах стола.

    There is a bus-stop at either end of the street — В начале и в конце улицы есть автобусная остановка.

    (3). Прилагательное either в обоих значениях сочетается с существительным в единственном числе:

    Take either book, they are both easy — Возьмите любую из этих книг, они обе не трудные.

    (4). For either 1. see any, a (5). II adv тоже (1). Наречие either употребляется в полных отрицательных предложениях:

    He doesn't know the answer either — Он тоже не знает ответа.

    (2). See also, adv. III prn каждый, любой ( из двух) (1). Местоимение either сочетается с существительным или личным местоимением в конструкции с предлогом of:

    either of them — любой из них.

    Существительное в таких словосочетаниях употребляется с определенным артиклем и указательным или притяжательным местоимением:

    You may take either of the/these/his two books — Вы можете взять любую из/этих/его двух книг.

    (2). Местоимение either, как правило, согласуется с глаголом-сказуемым в единственном числе. Однако в неофициальной речи, в особенности в отрицательных предложениях, глагол может употребляться в форме множественного числа:

    I don't think either of them are at home — Я не думаю, что кто-то из них дома.

    either… or IV или… или (1). Форма глагола, согласующегося с подлежащим, которое состоит из двух существительных или местоимений, объединенных союзом either… or, зависит от формы последнего существительного:

    Either my parents or I am going to help you — Вам помогут мои родители или я.

    Either Tom or his friends are going to help you — Том или его друзья Вам помогут.

    Этому правилу следуют и союзы neither… nor, not only… but also. (2). Союз either… or требует одинакового построения соединяемых частей предложения, т. е. слова, стоящие после either и or, должны принадлежать к одной и той же части речи или быть одним и тем же членом предложения:

    I'd like to go either to the theatre or to the cinema.

    You can either write to him or phone.

    He must be either in his office or somewhere around.

    Такого же построения требуют союзы both… and, neither… nor, not only… but also:

    He speaks not only German, but also French — Он говорит не только по-немецки, но и по-французски.
