Первое братство было основано в 1825 [ Kappa Alpha], их число стало расти после 1840. Общества с самого начала принимали студентов из привилегированных слоев общества и поощряли конформизм в мышлении и поведении. В 70-е гг. XIX в. влияние братств настолько возросло, что многие колледжи пытались запретить их деятельность. К 1898 большинство студентов-юношей были членами братств и считали свою жизнь в домах братств [ fraternity house] и взаимовыручку важной частью образования. Противники братств указывали, что они разделяют университет на враждебные фракции, проповедуют зависть, распущенность, мотовство и хулиганство. В конце 1960-х гг., когда студенты были вовлечены в серьезную политическую деятельность, братства стали терять популярность (в 1972 юноши-члены братств составляли менее 4 процентов студентов, а в 1984 в Колледже Амхерст [ Amherst College], например, был введен запрет на братства). В 70-е гг. вновь наметился их стабильный рост. К 1990 число членов в братствах составляло около 400 тыс. человек в 77 общенациональных обществах с числом отделений от 5 до 110.
