(UNDL: universal networking digital language)Créée en janvier 2001, l’UNDL Foundation (UNDL: universal networking digital language) gère le Programme UNL (universal networking language), un programme international débuté en janvier 1997 sous l’égide de l’UNU/IAS (United Nations University / Institute of Advanced Studies) avec la participation de nombreux organismes dans toutes les communautés linguistiques. 2 Wikimedia Foundation
Fondée en juin 2003, la Wikimedia Foundation gère non seulement Wikipedia mais aussi Wiktionary, un dictionnaire et thésaurus multilingue lancé en décembre 2002, puis Wikibooks (livres et manuels en cours de rédaction) lancé en juin 2003, Wikiquote (répertoire de citations), Wikisource (textes appartenant au domaine public), Wikimedia Commons (sources multimédia), Wikispecies (répertoire d’espèces animales et végétales), Wikinews (site d’actualités) et enfin Wikiversity (matériel d’enseignement), lancé en août 2006. La fin 2007 devrait voir le lancement d’un moteur de recherche dénommé Wiki Search, qui utiliserait le réseau de contributeurs de Wikipedia pour classer les sites en fonction de leur qualité. -

Lancé en 1998, Mozilla est d’abord un navigateur issu du code source de Netscape (le premier grand navigateur du marché), avec une messagerie électronique intégrée. En juillet 2003 est créée la Mozilla Foundation, une fondation indépendante subventionnée par AOL (groupe Time Warner), IBM, Sun Microsystems et Nokia, dans l’optique du lancement de deux produits distincts: le logiciel de navigation Firefox et la messagerie électronique Thunderbird. En novembre 2004, suite au succès immédiat de sa version test (8 millions de téléchargements en un mois), Firefox débute son ascension mondiale face au tout puissant Internet Explorer de Microsoft. En février 2005, Firefox représente 8% du marché des navigateurs, avec 25 millions de téléchargements. A la même date, la Mozilla Foundation signe un partenariat avec le moteur de recherche Google. En août 2005, du fait de l’augmentation sensible de ses revenus, la Mozilla Foundation crée une division commerciale dénommée Mozilla Corporation. L’existence d’une division commerciale ne modifie pas les conditions de licence des logiciels, dont les codes sont publiés sous licence ouverte.
