(р. 1921) Хелмс, Джесси (Александер)Консервативный политический деятель, бизнесмен. Один из лидеров "Новых правых" [ New Right]. Во время второй мировой войны служил в ВМС [ Navy, U.S.]. В 50-е годы - помощник двух сенаторов, член городского совета г. Роли, шт. Северная Каролина. Известен как сторонник обязательной молитвы в школах [ school prayer] и противник абортов, финансирования программ по борьбе со СПИДом [ AIDS], программ позитивных действий [ affirmative action] и т.п. В 1973-2003 сенатор-республиканец от штата Северная Каролина. В 1995-2001 - председатель сенатского комитета по внешней политике [Committee on Foreign Relations].
