    used in a two-part statement in which the element directly following не то что or не то чтобы is more pertinent to the speaker and the other element, an exaggeration, is used for reinforcement:
    - not only... (, but...);
    - [when, in translation, the element introduced by не то что etc follows the other, more extreme, element] let alone;
    - much less.
         ♦ [Говорящий - мул] ""Сейчас никому нельзя доверять. Даже собственному мулу не доверяй своих мыслей!" Ну уж такой глупости я от Самуила никак не ожидал. Я не то чтобы предать своего хозяина, я жизнь готов за него отдать" (Искандер 3). [The speaker is a mule]"'You mustn't confide in anyone now. Don't even confide your thoughts to your own mule!' Now, I never expected to hear such foolishness from Samuel. I not only wouldn't betray my master, but would lay down my life for him" (За). ФУГ удзя генеральский авторитет, но он безволен, трусоват, видимо необразован... Была бы воля Ершова, он генералу Гудзю полком не доверил бы командовать, не то что корпусом (Гроссман 2). General Gudz had the authority of his rank, but he was weak-willed, cowardly and obviously uneducated....If it had been up to him, Yershov wouldn't have trusted Gudz with a regiment, let alone a whole corps (2a).

[М.:] I thought you two were inseparable. [Sh.:]... Even husbands and wives part company, to say nothing of friends (3a).

"March took two days from April and brewed up some weather that was so bad you wouldn't set foot out of doors for a call of nature, much less lead the flock out" (3a).
