Se hizo director con Thomas Ince y logro algun western mudo de buen nivel, como The Narrow Trail (1917), con Wil liam S. Hart, para quien siempre fue su director favorito, co mo protagonista. Trabajo basicamente para Colum bia y Monogram, y hay quien afirma que si Hil lyer hu biera dispuesto de presupuestos holgados, su nombre se incluiria hoy entre los grandes del western.
