Créé en 1995, le moteur de recherche AltaVista devient rapidement très populaire. Il est utilisé en parallèle avec Yahoo!, qui est à l’époque un annuaire (avec classement des sites web effectué manuellement) avant de devenir lui aussi un moteur de recherche. AltaVista est le premier outil du web à permettre la recherche d’images et la recherche par sujets (AltaVista Subject Search). Il est aussi le premier à être disponible en 14 langues, dès 1997. En décembre 1997, en partenariat avec la société Systran, AltaVista lance Babel Fish (appelé aussi AltaVista Translation), un service de traduction automatique de l’anglais vers d’autres langues (allemand, espagnol, français, italien et portugais), et vice versa. Ce service permet de traduire une page web ou un texte relativement court (en faisant un copier-coller). Il rencontre un succès immédiat, et reste toujours très utilisé dans les années 2000. Par contre, le moteur de recherche lui-même se trouve progressivement supplanté par les géants Yahoo! et Google. -
