•• * Словари не отмечают, что наречие famously в отличие от прилагательного famous часто имеет несколько иронический характер по отношению к подлежащему соответствующего предложения. Вот пример из Washington Post:
•• Lord Derby famously called the increase of Britain’s electorate under the Reform Bill of 1867 “a leap into the dark.”
•• По-русски с близким значением говорят печально известный или небезызвестный. Как вставить это слово в перевод – дело техники. Можно, например, так:
•• Напомним печально известное/небезызвестное высказывание лорда Дерби, назвавшего....
•• Можно и по-другому:
•• Небезызвестный лорд Дерби в свое время сказал, что расширение избирательных прав согласно закону о реформе 1867 года – это « прыжок во тьму».
•• Правда, встречается и нейтральное употребление этого слова. Тогда перевод не вызывает трудности – можно воспользоваться любым стандартным русским оборотом типа как известно. Но вот провести различие между ироническим и нейтральным употреблением не всегда легко, некоторые случаи – на грани. В переводе нужно поискать вариант, где ирония не била бы в глаза:
•• Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld famously talks about preparing for the “unknown unknowns.” Yet the present crisis was hardly unforeseeable, and Rumsfeld did not ensure that the military was prepared to deal with it. (Weekly Standard)
•• Здесь скорее не ирония, а «прокурорский тон», который можно передать, скажем, так:
•• Стала знаменитой фраза министра обороны Рамсфелда о « неизвестных неизвестных». Но ведь нынешний кризис трудно назвать непредсказуемым, и именно Рамсфелд виноват в том, что военные оказались к нему не готовы.
