Фирма является также неотъемлемым звеном теории рынка, в которой объясняется, каким образом фирмы взаимодействуют друг с другом и как их решения о ценах и объеме производства влияют на рыночное предложение и цену (см. Существует несколько организационно-правовых форм компаний: а) единоличное владение (sole proprietorship) - компания, которой владеет и распоряжается одно лицо; б) партнерство (partnership) - компания, принадлежащая двум или нескольким партнерам, которые управляют ею на основе договора о партнерстве; в) акционерная компания( joint-stock company) - компания, собственником которой являются держатели обыкновенных акций.
