ABILITY, CAPACITYAbility имеет в виду способность делать, совершать что-л., находящую выражение в действии; употребляется всегда с инфинитивом: ability to learn. Capacity обозначает потенциальную способность, проявляющуюся в наличии умения, склонности или готовности к действию, но не обязательно находящую выражение в непосредственном действии; часто употребляется с предложным дополнением: capacity for learning. Таким образом, ability to work отличается от capacity for work: ability to work предполагает наличие физической силы, специальных знаний, квалификации и т. д., необходимых для выполнения работы; capacity for work подчеркивает готовность и желание работать. Ability to sing имеет в виду наличие музыкального слуха и певческого голоса, capacity for singing свидетельствует о склонности к пению (может быть, даже при отсутствии слуха и голоса).
