Подозрения Кинлэна сразу же падают на жениха дочери Линнекара Санчеса. Отец невесты противился их браку, и потому, по версии Кинлэна, Санчес якобы выкрал со стройки, на которой он работал, динамит, чтобы изготовить бомбу. Кинлэн проводит жесткий допрос Санчеса и «находит» в его ванной 2 динамитные шашки. Варгас убежден, что шашки подброшены самим Кинлэном. Он начинает собственное расследование о прошлом Кинлэна и узнает, что тот издавна слыл мастером подделки улик. В это время жену Варгаса Сьюзен, которую муж отвез в мотель на окраине города, похищает банда негодяев, нанятая племянниками владельца гостиницы Джо Грэнди, чей брат был арестован Варгасом в Мехико за контрабанду наркотиков. Сьюзен накачивают тиопенталом и отвозят в гостиницу Грэнди. Эта операция ― результат «договора» между Грэнди и Кинлэном, который вовсе не собирается позволить Варгасу испортить ему карьеру и репутацию. Из предосторожности Кинлэн душит Грэнди в том номере, где лежит без сознания Сьюзен. Сьюзен арестовывают за употребление наркотиков и убийство Грэнди; Варгас находит ее в тюрьме. Пит Мензис, правая рука Кинлэна, благодарен шефу за то, что тот спас ему жизнь; однако методы Кинлэна ему отвратительны, и Мензис сообщает Варгасу, что полицейский оставил на месте преступления свою трость. Варгас закрепляет микрофон на спине Мензиса и следует с рацией за ним по пятам, пока тот пытается разговорить Кинлэна. Но полицейский слышит, что каждое слово Мензиса повторяется эхом, и разгадывает замысел врагов. Он убивает Мензиса и уже целится в Варгаса, как вдруг в него стреляет умирающий Мензис. Кинлэн падает в реку. После этого становится известно, что Санчес признался в убийстве, тем самым подтвердив подозрения Кинлэна. Таня, немолодая танцовщица, к которой частенько захаживал Кинлэн, чтобы пропустить стаканчик в хорошей компании, произносит надгробную речь: «Вот же человек был».► Мистер Аркадии, Mr. Arkadin и Печать зла – вершина уэллсовского барокко. Стиль барокко, краткое и радикальное определение которому дал Борхес («я называю барокко конечный этап каждого искусства, когда оно выставляет напоказ и растрачивает свои средства»), замечательно подходит Уэллсу для описания изношенного, загнивающего мира, к концу 2-го тысячелетия почти достигшего последней стадии разложения. Конечно, ни одна из 2 историй, рассказанных в этих фильмах, не могла произойти в иное время, нежели в XX в. – в эпоху, когда мир катастрофически стареет в глазах Уэллса, всегда пытавшегося придумать и воплотить персонажей, служащих образом этого мира и равных ему по масштабу. Молодость сильно мешала ему в достижении этой цели: отсюда его любовь к гриму и парикам, которыми он часто злоупотребляет. Если парики Уэллса в Мистере Аркадине почти так же чудовищны, как в Гражданине Кейне, Citizen Kane, в Печати зла он дарит зрителю впечатляющий образ одутловатого и неуправляемого старика – можно совершенно забыть о том, что актеру в то время было всего 42 года.С точки зрения техники может показаться, что стили Мистера Аркадина и Печати зла очень разнятся: в одном – короткий, рубленый монтаж, обилие планов, создающее прерывистый и богатый сюрпризами ритм; в другом – длинные планы, которые тянутся так долго, что, кажется, вот-вот лопнут. И все-таки 2 разных стиля служат одной цели: нарисовать портрет агонизирующего мира, подвести ему итог и описать его предсмертные конвульсии. Впрочем, сам Уэллс пояснял, что прибегал к короткому монтажу при острой нехватке средств, а к длинным планам – в тех случаях, когда денег было немного больше. Естественно, Уэллс пользуется длинными планами совсем иначе, нежели Преминджер, пытающийся таким образом максимально устранить монтаж в погоне за идеалом – фильмом, состоящим из единственного плана. Длинный план Уэллса громогласно заявляет о себе каждой своей секундой. Это отважный поступок, призванный поразить воображение зрителя и создать внутреннее напряжение, связанное не столько с фабулой фильма, сколько с виртуозностью режиссера. 1-й план Печати зла – движение вслед за обреченной машиной (без сомнения, самый удивительный и значительный длинный план во всем творчестве Уэллса) – прекрасно сочетает обе разновидности напряжения. В остальном, что касается неистовой и контрастной операторской работы (Уэллс по своей природе абсолютно чужд цветной пленке), использования коротких фокусов и необычных ракурсов (съемки с верхней и нижней точки), оба фильма практически идентичны, оба создают сумеречное пространство, наполненное спешащими куда-то призраками: здесь даже начинающий киноман безошибочно распознает почерк Уэллса.На уровне сценария оба фильма гораздо слабее, но это лишь подстегивает Уэллса; персонажи интересуют его больше, чем действие, а атмосфера – еще больше, чем персонажи. Темы продажности власти, живучих и мучительных воспоминаний, невозможности спастись от них, даже сменив личность (что подчеркивается изобилием масок и мест, где персонажи безуспешно пытаются найти укрытие), вновь и вновь возникают между строк и между кадров. Сценарий Мистера Аркадина чуть превосходит по качеству Печать зла, поскольку его конструкция позаимствована у нуаров, чьим предшественником явился Гражданин Кейн, и поскольку он сторонится резкого противопоставления добра и зла. Все персонажи стоят друг друга: каждый играет свою роль в тотальной коррумпированности мира. Напротив, сценарий Печати зла, полный условностей, небрежностей и натяжек, остается одним из самых посредственных сценариев в жанре американского послевоенного детектива. Но это не так уж и важно, раз он позволил Уэллсу в последний раз представить во всей красе свой театр теней и кошмаров.N.В. Неправомерны попытки включить Уэллса в число величайших художников 1-го века кино. Время исправит эту ошибку, допущенную историками кинематографа, которым очень трудно объективно исследовать этот вид искусства по причине его новизны. Было бы несправедливо не признавать за Уэллсом несомненных достоинств: он был великим щеголем, сумевшим убедить современников в своей гениальности; талантливым фокусником, умеющим пустить пыль в глаза; блестящим мегаломаном, которому мегаломания принесла мировую славу и признание выше всяких границ и при этом лишила возможности оставить после себя богатое и цельное творческое наследие, подготовленное кропотливым трудом многих людей в Голливуде, так и оставшихся в неблагодарной безвестности.
