1 Estuary English
«Эстуарный английский». Модный термин, созданный в 1984 г. лондонским учёным Дэвидом Розуорном (David Rosewarne), чтобы обозначить вид немного нестандартного английского, используемого многими молодыми людьми в настоящее время и являющегося протестом против нормативного английского. Эстуарий — это устье, здесь — это устье Темзы, и термин Estuary English означает разнообразие неформального, якобы бесклассового английского, бытующего в Лондоне и в некоторых окружающих Лондон графствах (особенно в северном Кенте, в южном Эссексе), а также в некоторых южных графствах. Для произношения такого английского характерно использование твёрдого гортанного звука (glottal stop) и замена звука [l] на [w] в таких словах, как tall, ballpoint, Maldon. Слово mouth звучит как mouf, а anything как anythink. Выбор слов также важен: cheers! вместо thank you и mate вместо friend. Только время покажет, сохранится ли мода на Estuary English или он будет со временем заменён какой-либо другой непривлекательной формой разговорного языка.
