Se le pellizca en la parte inferior, para que el dolor la obligue a sacar la cabeza y pueda apresarla el matador. en el momento de matarla se llama Aya kuá tiro ko "que es decir como sentenciado". Muchos babá orishas entienden que Jicotea es el animal de "mayor categoria o mérito". "Su sangre, la más fuerte de todas; con mucho espiritu". Este animal sagrado, "con grandes misterios" requiere al ser sacrificado a Changó, y a aquellos otros orishas "que comen jicotea" -Agayu, Osaín, Inle- la asistencia de cuatro personas responsables, iniciadas, que se situarán a un lado y otro del animal. Después de cortada la cabeza, se le cortan las cuatro patas comenzando por la derecha, la delantera y la trasera; y después en el mismo orden las otras dos de la izquierda. A la jicotea, antes de ser decapitada, se le unta en el carapacho el epó, -manteca de corojo-, a que alude el canto.
