Уникальной имя, выделяющее в сети оконечную систему среди себе подобных.
Каждая оконечная система любого размера от Персонального Компьютера (ПК) до суперкомпьютера получает в сети Internet имя, определяемое системой доменов имен DNS.
Эти буквенные сокращения удобны людям, но не компьютерам. Поэтому для последних оконечным системам также приписываются уникальные адреса IP.
Доменное имя оконечной системы используется в унифицированном указателе ресурсов и в адресе электронной почты.
