538 специально выбранных лиц, в функции которых входит избрание президента [ President, U.S.] и вице-президента [ Vice-President, U.S.] на втором этапе двухступенчатых выборов. Состав коллегии выборщиков и порядок ее работы определены Статьей I Конституции США [ Constitution, U.S.] и Двенадцатой поправкой [ Twelfth Amendment] к ней. В США существует 51 коллегия выборщиков, кандидаты в которые выдвигаются Демократической [ Democratic Party] и Республиканской [ Republican Party] в каждом из 50 штатов (в соответствии с их законодательством) и в округе Колумбия [ District of Columbia], причем члены Конгресса США [ Congress, U.S.] или лица, находящиеся на государственной службе [ civil service], выдвигаться не могут. Численный состав коллегии выборщиков каждого штата равен числу сенаторов [ senator] и членов Палаты представителей [ Representative] Конгресса, представляющих данный штат; округ Колумбия имеет право избрать трех выборщиков [ elector]. В декабре года президентских выборов, то есть на втором этапе выборов, выборщики голосуют у себя в штате, традиционно поддерживая кандидатов от своей партии.
