Образовавшись в XV в., слово an esquire (эсквайр) относилось к молодому человеку благородного происхождения, который являлся оруженосцем рыцаря и оказывал ему разные другие услуги. С того же времени и позже это слово обозначало человека, принадлежащего к высшему сословию нетитулованного мелкопоместного дворянства (джентри), и было рангом ниже рыцаря. С течением времени некоторые другие категории людей тоже получали право называться esquire: младшие сыновья пэров, старшие сыновья рыцарей, судьи, барристеры и многие другие. С середины XVI в. это слово стало обычным вежливым обращением в письмах (ставится после фамилии), например: Andrew Smith, Esquire. Впоследствии слово esquire стало употребляться в сокращении: Esq., Esqu. и т. п. (в настоящее время обычно употребляется Esq.). К середине XX в. Esq. полностью утратило сословное значение и стало использоваться в переписке как обращение к любому совершеннолетнему мужчине. Такое положение вещей существует и ныне, но менее формальные виды обращения постепенно вытесняют Esq. Когда Esq. добавлено к имени, никакой другой титул или звание (Mr., Dr., Capt.) не нужны. Нужно отметить, что Esq. практически не употребляется за пределами Британии. Этот термин употребляется юристами в Америке при обращении друг к другу или в переписке. Интересно, что в США Esq. часто добавляется к именам женщин-юристов так же, как и к именам мужчин-юристов. -
