Один из типов программ для обработки изображений. Обычно применяется для художественного рисования. Paint program воспринимает рисунок как густую сетку отдельных пикселей, в отличие от программ рисования (draw program), которые работают с элементами рисунка как с объектами. При этом очень удобным является создание полутонов путем изменения окраски отдельных точек. Степень детализации рисунка (количество пикселей на единицу длины или площади) в конечном итоге зависит от печатающего устройства, на которое будет выведен рисунок.
