программная система, позволяющая управлять распределёнными БД, причём делать это так, что распределённость БД оказывается прозрачной (незаметной) для пользователей. Распределённая БД - это совокупность логически взаимосвязанных БД, физически размещающихся в разных местах компьютерной сети. Термин DDMS обычно употребляется для обозначения как распределённой БД, так и распределённой СУБД (DDBMS). DDMS могут архитектурно представляться в виде клиент-серверных (см. client/server architecture) или пиринговых (peer-to-peer) систем. В первом случае за управление БД отвечает один или несколько серверов, которые обрабатывают SQL-запросы пользователей, передаваемые клиентами (клиенты обычно имеют ограниченные функциональные возможности и только транслируют запросы серверам).
