Техническое средство или вещество, предназначенное для установления наличия какой-либо физической величины или превышения уровня ее порогового значения.
Пример. Индикатором наличия (или отсутствия) измерительного сигнала может служить осциллограф. Индикатор близости к нулю сигнала называют нулевым или нуль-индикатором. При химических реакциях в качестве индикатора применяют лакмусовую бумагу и какие-либо вещества. В области измерений ионизирующих излучений индикатор часто дает световой и (или) звуковой сигнал о превышении уровнем радиации его порогового значения.
