    to dare, nella definizione 1, può essere usato sia come verbo regolare che come verbo modale.
    1 Come verbo regolare è seguito dall'infinito con to ed è usato per lo più in frasi negative e interrogative: She doesn't dare to meet him alone, non osa (o non se la sente di) incontrarlo da sola; We didn't dare to go in, non osammo entrare; Would you dare to state it publicly?, avresti il coraggio (o te la sentiresti) di affermarlo pubblicamente?
    2 L'uso modale è comune soprattutto in frasi negative e interrogative con il verbo al presente; come modale to dare è privo di flessione ed è seguito dall'infinito senza to; la forma negativa contratta è daren't: I daren't tell what I saw, non oso raccontare ciò che ho visto; How dare you suggest I was lying?, come osi insinuare che stessi mentendo?
    3 Sono infine possibili costruzioni miste: I did not dare speak, non osai parlare (l'uso di do è proprio del verbo regolare, ma l'assenza di to prima di speak è propria di quello modale); Mary dares not ask him about his past, Mary non osa chiedergli del suo passato (la -s di dares è propria del verbo regolare; la negazione con not anziché con doesn't e l'assenza di to davanti ad ask sono proprie di quello modale); Don't you dare touch me, non osare toccarmi!; prova (soltanto) a toccarmi!
