(1851-1931) Дьюи, МелвилБиблиотечный работник, автор системы каталогизации. Начал работать в библиотеке Амхерстского колледжа [ Amherst College] еще студентом. В 1876 опубликовал труд "Классификация и предметный указатель для каталогизирования и расположения книг и брошюр в библиотеке", изложив ныне хорошо известную десятичную систему Дьюи [ Dewey Decimal System]. В том же году участвовал в создании Американской библиотечной ассоциации [ American Library Association], ее секретарь до 1890, президент в 1890-91 и 1892-93. С 1882 заведующий библиотекой Колумбийского колледжа [Columbia College; Columbia University]. Спустя 4 года создал факультет библиотечного дела [School of Library Economy].
