описание. У Боэция это один из способов выявления смыслов вещей (наряду с определением). «Один смысл субстанции дается в описании, другой - в определении; то, что дается в описании, содержит в себе некую совокупность собственных признаков той вещи, субстанцию которой оно выражает; но при этом оно не только составляет образ вещи из ее собственных признаков, а и само становится таким признаком и, следовательно, непременно должно войти в состав определения, как собственный признак» (Боэций. Комментарий к Порфирию //Боэций. Утешение философией. С. 18). В другом месте Боэций пишет, что «философы дают тщательное описание рода, но не определение. Ведь определение дается на основании рода, а род не может охватываться, в свою очередь, еще одним родом... ведь выше рода нет ничего, что можно было бы предпослать ему... описание же... есть информация вещи посредством ее собственных признаков, как бы изображение ее красками на картине. Когда многие признаки собраны воедино так, что все вместе они равны той вещи, которой принадлежат, тогда получается то, что мы зовем описанием, при условии, что в эту совокупность не входят ни род вещи, ни ее отличительные признаки» (там же. С. 37-38). Описание и определение взаимодополнительны друг другу, а в качестве собственных признаков (см. DEFINITIO) равны друг другу. description - описание, изображение; дает характеристику или указывает свойство вещи (в отличие от определения, которое указывает род и вид); следовательно, описание может недвусмысленно указать на род, но не может утверждать сущность.
