универсальный магазин, универмагВпервые универмаги появились в США в конце XIX в. До их возникновения дорогие товары хранились в подсобках и демонстрировались преимущественно богатым покупателям. Универмаги завоевывали популярность широким развитием услуг: бесплатной доставкой товаров, правом возвращать купленный товар и т.п. В универмагах впервые появилась открытая выкладка товаров, ярко оформленные витрины и, главное, твердая цена товара, указанная на этикетке (до этого цена определялась по соглашению покупателя и продавца). Пионерами создания универмагов были Р. Мейси [Macy, Rowland Hussey] в г. Нью-Йорке, М. Филд [ Field, Marshall] в г. Чикаго и Дж. Уонамейкер [ Wanamaker, John] в Филадельфии.
