A slightly inferior quality of "Dacca Muslin", but is now practically extinct. The fabric owes its name (lit. "running water") to its texture, which is believed to have been so fine as to render the material invisible if immersed in flowing water. Hand woven (sec also Sangati, Shabnam and Sharbati), made 36-in. X 20 yards and weighing 9 to 111/2-oz. per piece. In 1866 a piece cost 120 s. -

BAFTA (derived from a Persian word signifying " woven ")Term used in the United Provinces. A lower grade of silk brocade or Kimkhwab made with a raw silk warp and cotton weft. The figures are developed in the silk yarn instead of with gold thread. This term is also given to a plain cloth made from mixture yams of cotton and silk. Manufactured on hand looms in Bankura, Dacca, and Bhagalpur. It is continuously worn as a wrapper by the natives. The term was originally applied to a fine muslin of Western India. -

A silk warp and cotton weft fabric made at Dacca, on hand looms. The warp is Muga silk and the weft is spun from native-grown cotton. Plain weave, and often embroidered with silk floss. -

B.W.G., JuteSignifies Birmingham wire gauge, the standard by means of which the thickness of sheet metal and the diameter of wire arid pins are measured, much used in the flax and jute industries. ———————— A fibre principally used for canvas bags, cordage, mats, wrappers, etc. Very largely manufactured in India, where the bulk of the fibre is grown. A good trade is done in Dundee. The fibre is obtained from the bast of the Corchorus Capsularis, an. annual plant grown from seed. The plant grows up to 17 feet in height. The fibre is very strong, fine, pliable, of brownish colour, and has a good lustre, is uniform in diameter, has good dyeing qualities, but when exposed to the weather soon deteriorates. ———————— There are many varieties of jute, the principal being Narzingunj, Daisee, Dowrah, Tossa, Bimlipitam or Mestha, Dacca and Chittagong (see under each of these names) -

A very clear and fine muslin formerly made in the Dacca district. -
54 Charkana
The fine muslin cloth made in Dacca, but woven in check designs. Mostly consumed in the district. The quality is the same as the Dooreea. Made in all sizes of checks. -

The term in India for the jute cloth made in the Dacca district. They use the short staple fibres as the long staple are exported. Gunny bags are made from the cloth and these are sold almost as cheap as the raw material. -
56 Coan Fabrics
Pliny mentions the fact that the women of Cos were in the habit of undoing the silk cloths imported into the Island, and reweaving the silk threads into other fabrics. These fabrics, or the Coan robes, as they were frequently designated, possessed a texture as transparent as that of the Dacca muslins. This method was done because the rulers of Assam and ancient China prohibited the export of silk thread, but permitted woven fabrics to be sent out of the country. -

60 Jamdanee
This term includes a large variety of loom figured muslins which were formerly the most costly productions of Dacca. They were woven on hand looms in very complicated designs. The yarn used was 200's to 250's. The fabrics were generally manufactured for royalty about the 16th and 17th centuries and cost up to ???2 per yard of 36-in. width.
