Метод бухгалтерской отчетности, который, в отличие от учета по ценам приобретения (historical-cost accounting), пытается учесть тот факт, что денежная единица (например, фунт стерлингов) не имеет постоянной цены, а потому в результате инфляции последовательные счета, использующие эту единицу, совсем не обязательно дают адекватную картину тенденций прибыли. Основным методом учета воздействия инфляции стал метод учета по текущим ценам (current-cost accounting) или по текущей покупательной способности (Current purchasing power accounting).

Традиционный метод ведения счетов, когда активы отражаются в балансах по той цене, по которой они обошлись организации (цены приобретения), за вычетом любой соответствующей амортизации. Такой метод в условиях высокой инфляции ведет к завышению прибылей, в результате чего стали применяться другие методы учета (см.: current-cost accounting (учет по текущим ценам), current purchasing power accounting (учет по текущей покупательной способности)). Сейчас большая часть организаций вернулась к бухгалтерскому учету по ценам приобретения.
