    1904-1975
       Todo un profesional de Hollywood, conocido por su capacidad para la direccion de actores, este hijo, a su vez, de actores empezo en el cine como ayudante de fotografia, antes de convertirse en director de fotografia. En 1930 empieza a dirigir cortos comicos de la serie “The Boy Friends” para Hal Roach. En 1933, ya en Universal, dirige su primer largometraje, aunque de inmediato pasara a RKO, para la que dirige ya alguna de sus peliculas prestigiosas como las dos protagonizadas por Katharine Hepburn y las dos en las que intervenia Fred Astaire, aunque la mas popular de sus peliculas de la decada fue el clasico de aventuras Gunga Din (1939). El nivel mas alto de prestigio lo alcanzo Stevens en la primera mitad de la decada de los 50 con tres filmes casi consecutivos, Un lugar en el Sol (A Place in the Sun, 1951), Raices profundas (Shane, 1953) y Gigante (Giant, 1956), las dos primeras producidas por Paramount, y la ultima por Warner Bros. Por la primera y la tercera recibio Stevens sendos Oscar de Hollywood. No se puede negar su acierto, aunque parcial, en la realizacion de una parte importante de las peliculas de Stevens, sin embargo, despues de contemplarlas le queda siempre al espectador avisado cierto poso de insatisfaccion, mas acusado en Gigante y casi imperceptible en Raices profundas, sin duda uno de los westerns mas famosos de la historia del cine, con un guion modelico, donde la famosa buena mano del realizador en la direccion de actores se justifica plenamente. Peli cula de atmosfera pero tambien con carga ideologica, Raices profundas es un western brillante.
