νεῦρον, τό, Sehne, Flechse; – 1) am menschlichen u. thierischen Leibe, Muskel- u. Knochenbänder, von denen die Spannkraft u. Stärke des Leibes abhängt, bei sp. Medic. νεῦρον συνδετικόν; Hom. nur einmal in dieser Bdtg, ἔγχεος αἰχμῇ νεῦρα διεσχίσϑη, Il. 16, 316, von den Sehnen unten am Fuß; ὀστᾶ τε καὶ νεῦρα vrbdt Plat. Phaed. 80 d; vgl. 98 c und Tim. 82 c, κατὰ φύσιν γὰρ σάρκες καὶ νεῦρα ἐξ αἵματος γίγνεται, öfter; χαλᾶν καὶ ξυντείνειν, nachlassen u. anspannen, Phaed. 98 d; Hippocr., Arist. u. Folgde. Bei Philoxen. (Ath. I, 6 a) ist es für penis gebraucht, wie das lat. nervus. – 2) auch die Fasern, die bei der Pflanze die Sehnen des thierischen Körpers vertreten, Plat. Polit. 280 c. – 3) eine aus Thiersehnen gemachte Schnur, Seil, Sehne, z. B. die Pfeilspitze am Schaft zu befestigen, ὡς δὲ ἴδεν νεῦρόν τε καὶ ὄγκους ἐκτὸς ἐόντας, Il. 4, 151; und so erklären Einige auch 4, 122, ἕλκε δ' ὁμοῦ γλυφίδας τε λαβὼν καὶ νεῦρα βόεια, wo es aber, = dem folgdn νευρὴν μὲν μαζῷ πέλασεν, die Bogensehne ist, in welcher Bdtg sonst Hom. nur die andere Form νευρή gebraucht, welche zu vergleichen. Man brauchte dergleichen Sehnen auch zum Nähen von Lederwerk, δέρματα συῤῥάπτειν νεύρῳ βοός, Hes. O. 546 (vgl. νευροῤῥάφος); u. zu Schleudern, Xen. An. 3, 4, 17; zu diesen und anderen Zwecken νεῦρα εἰργασμένα, Pol. 7, 56, 3. – 4) wie bei uns Nerv, wird es auch übertr. für Spannkraft, Stärke gebraucht u. bezeichnet Alles, was einer Sache Nachdruck giebt, wie Plat. Rep. III, 411 b sagt ἕως ἂν ἐκτέμῃ τὸν ϑυμὸν ὥςπερ νεῦρα ἐκ τῆς ψυχῆς; Aesch. 3, 166 verbnidet ὑποτέτμηται τὰ νεῠρα τῶν πραγμάτων mit ἀατνετμήκασί τινες τὰ κλήματα τοῠ δήμου; Bion bei D. L. 4, 48 nennt den Reichthum νεῦρα πραγμάτων (vgl. auch ἐκνευρίζω). So auch Dem. 19, 283: οὐδέν ἐστ' ὄφελος πόλεως, ἥτις μὴ νεῦρα ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀδικοῦντας ἔχει; u. Plut. ἡ κάϑαρσις αὐτοῠ (τοῦ οἴνου) ἐκτέμνει τὰ νεῦρα καὶ τὴν ϑερμότητα κατασβέννυσιν, Symp. 6, 7, 1. Auch ν. τῆς τραγῳδίας, Ar. Ran. 861 u. B. A. 64, 26; νεῦρα τῶν πράξεων, Crant. bei S. Emp. adv. eth. 53. – 59 erst nach Arist. entspricht es dem jetzigen Gebrauche des Wortes Nerven u. bezeichnet die vom Gehirn auslaufenden Empfindungswerkzeuge. – 6) die aus Thiersehnen gemachten Saiten, auch Darmsaiten, Sp., wie Luc. D. Mar. 1, 4, ἐνάψας τὰ νεῦρα.
