cowardliness

  • 61 как бы чего не вышло

    [sent; Invar; fixed WO]
    =====
    (usu. reflects s.o.'s cowardliness, extreme indecisiveness, alarmism etc) sth. bad, unpleasant, dangerous etc might happen:
    - [in limited contexts] you (one) can never be too careful.
         ♦ А вдруг как раз в день рождения матери приехал Аркашка? Приехал и ждет её?.. А она ходит в чистом поле сама по себе и ничего-то не знает... И вообще - как бы чего не вышло, уж очень умиротворённым и спокойным оказался нынче день, а за спокойствием всегда что-нибудь да кроется (Залыгин 1). But what if Arkady had turned up at home, on his mother's birthday? What if he was waiting for her now?... And she'd been wandering gaily in the open fields, never thinking he might be there....All sorts of things could have happened! The day had been too serenely calm, and there was always something lurking under a calm surface (1a).
         ♦...Они [местные власти] требовали эти стихи на предварительный просмотр. А просмотрев, бывало, запрещали представление. Причем мотивировки запрещений были разнообразные. Наичаще такая: "Наш народ бедный, и нечего ему тратить деньги на ваши представления". Бывали и ответы загадочные: "Боимся, как бы чего не вышло благодаря вашим представлениям" (Булгаков 5)....They [the local authorities] demanded to see the script and, having seen it, often forbade its performance, giving a variety of reasons. The most frequent of these reasons was: "Our people are poor, and there is no need for them to waste money on your shows." There were also enigmatic answers, such as "We are afraid that your shows may lead to trouble..." (5a).
