Девять негров-подростков, снятых с товарного поезда Чаттануга-Скоттсборо, обвинялись в групповом изнасиловании двух белых проституток, 19-летней В. Прайс [Price, Victoria] и 17-летней Р. Гейтс [Gates, Ruby], снятых с того же состава. Восемь человек были приговорены к смертной казни, а 13-летний подросток - к пожизненному заключению. Приговор по одному делу был обжалован в Верховном суде США [ Supreme Court, U.S.] в том же году. В своем решении по делу "Пауэлл против штата Алабама" [Powell v. Alabama] Суд указал, что местный суд нарушил принцип объективности судебного разбирательства, не обеспечив надлежащую защиту обвиняемых [ due process], гарантированную им Четырнадцатой поправкой [ Fourteenth Amendment]. Еще один приговор был рассмотрен Верховным судом в 1935 (дело "Норрис против штата Алабама" [Norris v. Alabama]). В решении Верховного суда указывалось, что предвзятость местного суда, среди прочего, выразилась в его нежелании привлечь к разбирательству негров-присяжных.
