Вашингтон, Джордж (1732—99), первый президент США и главнокомандующий американскими войсками, одержавшими победу в Войне за независимость США. Летом 1775, через несколько недель после начала Войны за независимость, принял командование американской армией. Отказавшись от переизбрания президентом на третий срок, ушёл в отставку в 1797, опубликовав «Прощальную речь» [*Farewell Address’], где предупреждал об опасности борьбы партий внутри страны и выступал за отказ США от участия в войнах и политических союзах за рубежом. После его смерти в 1799 Конгресс, отмечая его заслуги, назвал его «первым в войне, первым в мирное время, первым в сердцах соотечественников» [*‘First in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen’].
