1 Weighting Cotton Fabric
Weight is added in the process of finishing cotton cloth to make the fabric appear thicker and of better quality than it really is. The chief weighting agents are China clay, Epsom salts, sodium sulphate, barium sulphate, and calcium sulphate. 8 Cotton Felt (Papermakers)
This is a thick fabric, made from several layers of cotton cloth, up to 6-ply cloth is made, each ply with its own warp and weft, and all are stitched together in the loom. 9 Cotton A La Lune
A very fine muslin fabric, embroidered down each border with coloured silks. 84 ends and 80 picks per inch, 150's T., 150's W., comber and gassed Sakel yarn. Made in widths up to 48-in. -
10 Cotton Crepe
A crinkled fabric of light weight, used for underwear, blouses, and dresses. Some of the heavier grades have floral and Japanese patterns and are used for kimonos and lingerie robes. -

A cotton fabric of very fine structure, plain weave, which is treated in finishing to imitate true skin parchment. -
12 Builder Fabric
This is the cotton cloth on which the motor tyre maker places the greatest reliance for the wearing qualities of the finished tyre. There are two main varieties, the square woven or " builder fabric," in which the warp and weft threads are practically equal, and the " cord " fabric, which is also square woven, but wherein the warp only is relied on for the strength or any other stress-resisting qualities that may be required. The builder fabric is tightly woven, giving it a stiff, hard feel, and is a superfine " duck." The standard fabric is 171/4 oz. per square yard, composed for 22's or 23's warp and weft yarns, 11-fold single ply, the twist in the single 14 to 15 turns, and in the ply yarn 4 to 5 turns per inch; 23 X 23-ends and picks per inch. 13 Lustre Dress Fabric
LUSTRES, LUSTRE DRESS FABRICA two-fold cotton warp dress fabric, with mohair weft of rather coarse counts. The warp is yarn-dyed and the cloth cross-dyed. During the finishing process the weft is thrown to the surface, entirely covering the warp by reason of the warp being pulled straight and the weft bending. All cotton cloths are sometimes sold as lustres. They are woven from bleached warp about 2/40's and soft spun dyed weft about 12's. 14 Apou Fabric
The Chinese name for the very brilliant and transparent fabrics made from ramie (see Ramie). These fabrics are known as "grass cloth" in England. The decortication of the fibre is carried out by hand, and they can be separated to almost the fineness of silk. The fibre is remarkably white and almost equal to bleached cotton in colour. It also has a lustre which excels linen in this respect. The cloths made vary from very fine muslin type, up to heavy plain, such as 60 X 60, 14/14 (cotton counts) -
15 Mercemsed Cotton
Cotton yarn or fabric to which lustre is imparted by treating it under tension with caustic soda. This mercerised cotton yarn has a greater affinity for dyes than unmercerised. Most mercerised yarns are two or more fold and the singles are specially spun and gassed prior to doubling. Mercerised yarns are spun with less twist than ordinary yarn in order to increase the lustre of the yarn. The cotton used is usually good Egyptian. The mercerising process increases the strength of the yarn by about 30 per cent, and decreases the weight about 5 per cent. -
16 Balloon Fabric
Fabrics for balloon and airship construction are of many varieties and silk, cotton and flax are made use of. They are all very fine in construction, but strong, and are proofed or made weather-proof some other way. One fabric is made three-ply, one of the outer fabrics running longitudinally, the other being cut in strips and placed transversely, while the middle fabric is cut diagonally and placed on the bias. This arrangement is believed to make the cloth so that it will not split, or tear, when pierced with holes. -
17 Chafer Fabric
The name denoting the fabric, in motor tyre making, that is placed between the bead and the overlapping edges of the builder fabric (see this), and has for an object the relieving of the friction between these two sections. It occupies a position on the sides of the tyre where most bending stress is encountered, and should therefore be light and flexible. It is plain weave, weighing from 9 to 91/4-oz. per square yard, 34-ends and 34 picks per inch; yams 16's 5-ends, 6 turns; 22's 4-ends, 81/2 turns. Should be made from the most flexible cotton obtainable. -
18 Cord Tyre Fabric
A cotton cloth for motor tyres devised to eliminate the chafing action of threads crossing each other, as obtains in the " builder " fabric. The cloth is made with strong corded threads for the warp, with as little weft as possible. The picks vary from 4 to 10 per inch. The warp threads are laid parallel and vary from 22 to 25 per inch. The weft is a single end of 21's to 23's with 10 to 16 turns per inch and is only intended to retain the warp threads in parallel order. The warp takes all the strain, and is composed of two-ply threads, counts 23's, 5 X 3 ends twisted right, left, right. The single yarn is 16 to 20 turns, first doubling 5 ends up, 16 to 20 turns, and the finishing twisting 15 ends (5 X 3) is also 16 to 20 turns per inch. 19 Etalit Fabric
A registered name for a fabric woven from horsehair and cotton for upholstery purposes, cushions, etc. The fabric is being produced in many designs, does not lose its natural lustre and can be cleaned with benzine. -
20 Acid-Proof Fabric
Nitrated cotton yam is woven into cloth for use as porous acid-proof fabric used for filtering purposes in electrolytic work. The yam can be woven along with asbestos, glass or other mineral fibres.
