Нанесение медных покрытий гальванич. методом на обезжир. и протравл. стальные поверхности или цинковые готовые изделия, а тж. на стальную проволоку. М. часто примен. для защиты отд. участков стальных изделий от цементации (науглероживания), к-рые в дальнейшем подлежат обработке резанием. Более распростран. область применения м. — защитно-декоративное хромиров. стальных или цинковых изделий, при к-ром Сu играет роль промежут. слоя; поверх Сu наносится слой Ni, а на него очень тонкий (~ 0,25 мм) слой Сr. Различают 2 типа медных электролитов: кислые и щелочные. Zn-изделия сложной формы меднятся только в щелочных (цианидных) электролитах.
Стальную проволоку и ленту покрывают медью, используя электролитич. или метал-лургич. способы. Электролитич. м. производят из нетоксичного пирофосфатного электролита. Металлургич. способ нанесения меди на проволоку (получение биметаллич. сталемед-ной проволоки) заключается в установке стального стержня в Cu-слиток и в последующей его прокатке и волочении. Недостаток способа — неравномерное распред. меди по попереч. сечению проволоки; большой расход меди на ед. готовой продукции; р-рение железа в меди в процессе ее сварки со сталью, резко снижающее электропроводность проволоки и приводящее к излишнему расходу меди. Для изгот. тончайшей сталемедной проволоки с высокой электропроводностью и прочностью используют электролитич. м. заготовки и дальнейшее волочение ее на проволоку задан, размера. При этом в завис, от треб, механич. и электротехнич. св-в готовой проволоки на заготовку наносят слой меди от 20 до 40 % (объемн.). При произ-ве сталемедной ленты для электротехнич. пром-ти на полосу наносят медь тж. электролитич. способом. Далее ведут дрессировку. Такая технология позволяет получать ленту сечением 0,1х(10—30) мм с высокими механич. и электротехнич. св-вами.
При волочении стальной проволоки исх. заготовку часто меднят контактным способом, погружая ее в р-р медного купороса. В этом случае медь на поверхности заготовки служит в кач-ве подсмазоч. покрытия, снижающего усилие волочения.
