Un protocole est un standard défini par des organismes patentés pour gérer la circulation des données. Les principaux protocoles de l’internet sont les suivants: TCP/IP (transmission control protocol / internet protocol) pour l’échange des données, FTP (file transfer protocol) pour le transfert des fichiers et HTTP (hypertext transfer protocol) pour le transfert des pages web. Ces protocoles sont régis par le consortium W3C (World Wide Web Consortium), organisme international fondé en octobre 1994 pour développer les protocoles communs nécessaires au développement du web. Ces protocoles font également l’objet de normes ISO (Organisation internationale de normalisation) et de normes UIT (Union internationale des télécommunications).
