Контрабанда еще больше, чем Шпион в черном, похожа на упражнение в стиле, где вперед постоянно выходит визуальный ряд в ущерб персонажам, сюжету и нравственному содержанию. В этой картине можно видеть шедевр формалистской режиссуры, чистой игры с формами и светом, которая достаточно увлекательна сама по себе из-за юмора и виртуозности постановщика. Почти гениальная операторская работа неожиданно использует лондонское затемнение: никому еще не удавалось передать его в кино настолько точно. Эту битву шпионов, где насилие выведено за скобки, едва ли можно назвать войной взрослых людей. Это скорее игра, показанная нарочито непринужденно и иронично, с такой непосредственностью и фантастичностью, что в наши дни фильм выглядит очень свежим. -
