Married women can either use the surnames they were born with or add their husband's first surname to theirs; so e.g. Carmen Pérez Rodríguez could also be known as Carmen Pérez de García or Carmen Pérez Rodríguez de García. In this particular case she could also be referred to as la señora de García. Thus, if Pedro García Fernández and María Piñedo Saavedra have a daughter called Eva, she will be known as Eva García Piñedo. This custom is followed in all official documents, though in everyday use many people use only their first surname. When a woman gets married, she usually keeps her full maiden name, rather than adopting her husband's. However, she can choose to adopt her husband's first surname as her second, or she can be known by her husband's name. So, if Eva García Piñedo married Carlos Hernández Río, she could either keep her own name intact, change it to Eva García Hernández or be known as Señora de Hernández Río. In Latin America she might also be known as Eva García Piñedo de Hernández.* * *m surname* * *apellido nm: last name, surname* * *apellido n surname -

8 ἑκατηβελέτης
Grammatical information: adj.Meaning: surname of Apollon (Α 75, Hes. Sc. 100, h. Ap. 157; always in gen. -έτᾱο);Other forms: after it ἑκατηβελέτις ( Theol. Ar.).Origin: GR [a formation built with Greek elements]Etymology: Either from βάλλω (s. v.) or (better) for *ἑκατη-βελής with enlarging - της as in αἰει-γενέτης for *αἰει-γενής etc. after ἀκαλα-ρρεϜέ-της (\> ἀκαλαρρείτης), νεφελ-ηγερέ-τα etc., cf. Schwyzer 451f. A compound with βάλλω is in any case the synonymous ἑκατη-βόλος, Dor. -ᾱ- (Il.). Already by the ancients compared with ἑκη-βόλος and interpreted as `hitting from afar' or as `with hundred shots' explained. Against the latter, which was proposed by Wackernagel IF 45, 314ff. (= Kl. Schr. 2, 1254ff.) (he translated: `hundreds hitting'), must be objected, that one would expect as 1. member ἑκατομ-, cf. the old word ἑκατόμ-βη. The attractive connection with ἑκη-βόλος suggests that ἑκατη-βελέτης, - βόλος are metrically lengthened "Streckformen", perh. adapted to ἑκατόν. ἑκατη-βόλος could be a cross of ἑκη-βόλος and Apollons epithet Ε῝κατος (Il.) (cf. z. B. Ἴφι-τος for Ίφι-κράτης, - κλῆς a. o.). (Wrong Bechtel Lex. s. v.) - After v. Wilamowitz Glaube 1, 325 Ε῝κατος, Έκάτη are from an Anatolian language and by the Greeks adapted to ἑκατηβόλος, ἑκηβόλος; but ἑκά-εργος is certainly Greek. - Further Schwyzer 439 n. 8, and Kretschmer Glotta 18, 235f.Page in Frisk: 1,474Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ἑκατηβελέτης

( APl.); also ἐναρσ-φόρος surname of Ares (Hes. Sc. 192), also name of a hero (Alcm.) with σ in the compound after ἐγχεσπάλος (Leumann Glotta 15, 155f., Schwyzer 336).Derivatives: Denomin. verbs: ἐναίρω, aor. ἐναρεῖν ( ἐξ- Hes. Sc. 329) `take away the ἔ.', euphemistic for `kill' (Il.); also ἐναρί-μβροτος `killing men' (Pi.; after φθεισί-μβροτος); (younger) ἐναρίζω, aor. ἐναρίξαι (Il.; in Hom. often ἐξ-; also ἀπ-, ἐπ-, κατ-) `id.'.Origin: XX [etym. unknown]Etymology: Unknown. Schwyzer IF 30, 440f. compared Skt. sánara-, ἅπ. λεγ. (RV. 1, 96, 8) of uncertain meaning. Connection with Skt. sanóti `win' (cf. ἄνυμι) would give for ἔναρα the original meaning `gain, booty'; one would have to accept psilosis. - Hardly an r-n-stem with Schwyzer 518. Pr. 18), θέμιτος (Pi. O. 13, 8); rarely also θέμιος (Hdt. 2, 50; v. l. - ιδος), θέμεως (inscr. Metropolis); acc. θέμιν (Hes.), voc. Θέμι (Ο 93). Plur. θέμιστες, acc. - ιστας etc. `statutes, (divine) laws, oracles' (Hom., Hes., Thgn., Pi.).Compounds: As 1. member e. g. in θεμι-σκόπος `preserving justice' (Pi.), θεμισ-κρέων `ruling through justice' (Pi.), θεμιστο-πόλος `supporting the laws, obeying the oracles' (h. Θεμιστο-κλῆς (s. on θέμερος)Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: To θέμις seems to agree Av. dā-mi- f. `creation', also `creator' (m. a. f.); cf. the same diff. between θέ-σις, - θε-τος as opposed to - dā-ti-, dā-ta- `basis, justice, law' (= θέμις). A problem is formed by the remarkable plural-formations θέμι-στ-ες, θέμι-στ-ος etc.; the explanation by Schulze (also Fraenkel Glotta 4, 22ff.) as a compound θεμι- and στᾱ- `stand', gives almost unsurmountable difficulties ; s. Frisk Eranos 48, 1ff. Beside monosyllabic κλη- (beside καλέ-σαι) Latin has clā- ( clā- mare, clā- rus; beside calā-re). The present καλέ-ω is no doubt an innovation, prob. to καλέσαι (Fraenkel Mélanges Boisacq 1, 367; diff. on καλέω, καλέσαι Specht KZ 59, 85ff.). - (Not cognate are κέλαδος ` noise'.) The α-vowel in καλέ-σαι will go back to a sonantic l̥ ; the same vowel is found in Italic, Lat. calāre ` declare', Umbr. kařetu (\< * kalē- tōd); further the not fully explained OHG, OS halōn `call, fetch' (= calāre), Hitt. kalleš- `call', Skt. uṣā- kal-a- `call' (s. ἠϊκανός). As in the semant. close IE. * kan- (s. καναχή) the a is clearly very old (is it connected with the onomatop. charcater of the verb?). - Forms in Pok. 548ff.; further W.-Hofmann and Ernout-Meillet s. calō.Page in Frisk: 1,762-763Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > καλέω

12 ῥαπίζω
ῥαπίζω, - ομαιGrammatical information: v.Meaning: ἐπι- (also `to reproach'), `to beat with a stick, a rod, by hand', pass. `to be beaten' (ΙΑ.).Compounds: Rarely w. prefix, e.g. ἐπι- (also `to reproach').Derivatives: ῥάπ-ισμα n. `stroke, slap in the face, box on the ears' (Antiph., NT, Luc.), - ισμός m. `id.' (Corn., Sor.); ἐπιρράπ-ιξις f. `reproach' (Ion. Hist.), - ισμός `id.' (Plb.). -- Besides as 2. member - ραπις in χρυσό-ρραπις, voc. -ι `with a golden rod', surname of Hermes (Od., h. Merc., Pi.), ἐΰ-ρραπις ( Έρμῆς) `with a beautiful rod' (Nonn.); ῥαπίς as simplex = ῥάβδος only H., Phot.Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]Etymology: As the simplex ῥαπίς may have been deduced from χρυσό-ρραπις and here - ις can be explained as compound-suffix ( ἄν-αλκ-ις, ἵππ-ουρ-ις), the basis of ῥαπίζω is uncertain. It may come from a noun (*ῥάψ, *ῥαπ-ή v.t.), but it can also be tranformation of a primary verb; cf. the examples in Schwyzer 735 f. -- Formally ῥαπίζω could be a zero grade formation of ῥέπω, ῥόπαλον and would indicate, if deverbative, a sweeping movement (of a rod, the hand etc.). Further s. ῥέπω; vgl. 1. ῥώψ, ῥάβδος, ῥάμνος; also ῥάπτω. -- The word may well be Pre-Greek.Page in Frisk: 2,642-643Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > ῥαπίζω
