Lancé en octobre 2001 par la société Apple, l’iPod est un baladeur numérique de musique. Les ventes de l’iPod montent en flèche à compter d’avril 2003, date à laquelle Apple lance sa plateforme de téléchargement de musique iTunes. L’iPod s’impose rapidement comme la référence du marché, et devient un objet culte auprès de toute une génération. Il se décline en plusieurs versions, avec plus ou moins de mémoire et de capacité de stockage, y compris un iPod mini (4 gigaoctets, soit 1.000 chansons), un iPod Photo (avec écran couleur de haute résolution) et un iPod Shuffle (modèle compact à mémoire flash et sans écran). Toutes versions confondues, 10 millions d’iPod sont vendus en trois ans, entre fin 2001 et fin 2004. De nouveaux modèles à des prix plus attractifs sont lancés en 2005 (entre 199 et 449 dollars US selon les modèles). A la même date, iTunes revendique 70% du marché mondial de téléchargement légal de musique. A la fin 2006, on compte 70 millions d’iPod écoulés en cinq ans. En janvier 2007, Apple annonce le lancement prochain du iPhone, un téléphone portable multifonctions comprenant un iPod intégré.
